Do you love gardening? Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned green thumb, the 2025 Get Growing Challenge is your chance to grow alongside an amazing community—and have fun while doing it! 🌿🏆

People today take for granted how easy and convenient it is to get food, and then find it easy to waste food because they think it is so readily available and abundant in the grocery stores.

There was a story of a lady who escaped from North Korea, Yeonmi Park. She mentioned that when she was in university, she and some of her friends caught a frog. They all looked at it for a while, then were going to set it free. Yeonmi stopped them, saying don’t let it go, that’s food. They all looked at her incredulously. They told her we don’t eat frogs here in America. She was amazed.

Because food is so scarce in North Korea, the people are very aware of their food sources, even if we find it offensive. Their connection to the very real danger of starvation is strong. And because food is so abundant in the West, we have a nonchalant attitude to food.

But times are indeed changing in Canada and the USA. The high inflation driving up the cost of food items in the grocery stores and markets have more and more people trying to think of ways to save money on that grocery bill. Growing your own food is one of the best ways to save more, eat more healthy, help the environment, and empower yourself.

Why This Challenge

In this year’s Get Growing Challenge, we want our community to inspire one another as well as inspire the next generation of gardeners! The politicians are saying hard times coming. That does not have to be, if we can grow food to help cushion the hardship.

The FreshFood4Life Get Growing Challenge 2025 theme is: Grow. Share. Inspire. Win!

  • Grow – Get out in the backyard, the curbside, the barrel, or wherever soil can meet seeds and create life!
  • Share – Growing food is fun when we have so much that we can share with our friends, family, and those less fortunate.
  • Inspire – Food is all about ideas. Ideas for making things grow better. Ideas for eating good food. When we learn and share ideas, we all grow together.
  • Win – Winning in the garden feels great! Let’s get that feeling and get others feeling it too!
