Japan recently invented a new word for ‘cruel heat’ New

Did you know that the Japanese people are very much into creating new words to describe many things. Just recently, I heard on Canada’s CBC that the Japanese people invented a new word for a day that is very hot and the temerature is over 40 degrees Celsius. That new word is call: Kokushobi

The word is meant to describe the temperature of the day along with the feeling of the day. So the word Kokushobi means a day over 40 degrees Celsius where the heat feels cruel to you. That is a very interesting way to describe the weather.

Last year we had a couple of Kokushobi days in our gardenhome garden A designated area around a residential property where individuals cultivate plants, fruits, vegetables, or ornamental plants for personal use. It comprises a farming system that combines physical, social, and economic functions on the area of land around a family home, providing a sustainable source of food and other benefits for the household, extended family, and friends.. Whew, it was really a hot day.

We’re hoping that we won’t have to use that word to describe our garden days this year. But it got me thinking, did you have any Kokushobi days in 2025 in your garden? Got any plans to mitigate it if it pops up this year? Now that’s something to think about…
